Shooting like a girl.

Today, my friends and I furthered the marksmanship training of a 15 year old girl. Despite the instructions, she continued to stand with a pronounced backward lean. I am not sure why most women stand like this, but almost all of them do unless extensively trained to do otherwise. It's almost as if they are trying to get as far away from their guns as possible...even with proper hearing protection.

S&W M10 (.38spl)

Chiappa .22LR (a 1911 look-alike with a stapler gun trigger)

She fired Walther P22, Chiappa pseudo-1911, Rock Island M1911 (45ACP), Rossi .44spl snubbie and the M10 .38spl. The range to the half-size silhouette target was 40 yards and she still managed 50-70% hits with all handguns! That was done with unconventional grip and unbalanced-looking stance. I can only wonder how well she would do with more training.

I also verified zero on the 458SOCOM AR and .308 LPR-07 backup sights, shot Superior Arms HBAR varmint rifle for accuracy. Details tomorrow. The results were pleasantly surprising.

A friend offered me a G23. I already have one but his is a 3rd Gen. gun with rails and I could use it as a photo prop. Mine is a 2nd Gen. pistol without rails. If I can sell mine, I'd buy his. Mine has tritium night sights installed. Asking $410 for this pistol with two magazines, would prefer a local sale.

(update)

I'll post un-holstered photo of when I have time to take one.

Was Beslan hostage rescue a Kobayashi Maru situation?

Looking at the photos from the Beslan incident, it seems that the responders were in a no-win situation and could only try to lose fewer of their own and of the hostages but not avoid heavy casualties in general. What do you think could have been done differently and how do you think US or European responders would fare should something similar occur?

Shooting accurately with "basic" equipment.

In theory, ball ammunition isn't all that accurate. 2MOA is typical dispersion.

In theory, milspec triggers and $160 high-magnification scopes aren't good enough for precision shooting.

(Superior Arms 20" HBAR)

In practice, a beanbag under the stock and a rolled-up shooting mat under the forend provide a steady position and the first three rounds after zeroing go into 0.5MOA group (0.25" group at 50 yards). I quit that group after three shots as there was no way I'd stay steady enough for additional shots. I shot a number of sub-MOA groups that day with the same ammo and 55gr Black hills moly-coated match, but nothing close to this first one. 45gr varmint JHPs had wider dispersion, I suspect that 1:9 barrel was too tightly twisted for them.

I credit mostly Appleseed with teaching me trigger and breath control, use of natural point of aim. JP "Gas Gun Basics" video taught me proper scope adjustment.

The red dot sight on top of the scope is less for backup at close range than for lining up the gun on target. With the scope set to 16x, using the red dot as a rough aiming guide helps to avoid hunting for the target through the scope's narrow field of view.

This rifle needs a sling. I'll have to add a sling swivel stud to the forend. Factory HBAR uppers have them, but mine doesn't. When firing from support, the lack of a sling isn't a factor, but it would be a handicap in a field position. I am also becoming a big fan of bipods, though with off-hand .308 the back of a bipod can impact support hand on recoil.

I recommend this accessory very much.

Primary Arms 4-16x showed itself very well. The reticle and the optic are clear, controls are well designed and repeatable. Return to zero adjustments are nice to have. The mount places the scope far enough forward to provide a comfortable cheek weld. At 16x, there's just a hint of chromatic fringing but not enough to matter. Close focus, useful range of reticle illumination, wide exit pupil all add up to a very nice (and inexpensive) solution for shot and medium range precision shooting.

My little .223 keeps evolving. This is the lighter of the two SU16s, with a shorter rail and no sound suppressor. AFG is set far back to aid in balancing the rifle using mostly the left hand.

Also SU16E, but with a longer rail and a sound suppressor. This one is heavier but also more accurate than the super-light version.
