Waiting for the release of Keltec RMR-30
22WMR sound suppressor.
The eventual host carbine, RMR-30.
Shot PMR30 this weekend, about a 100 rounds of various types of ammunition. Boring reliability, and hitting half-size silhouette at 45m was trivially easy. Good trigger and excellent sights help much.

How to shop on Amazon.de?
I'd like to send a present to my cousin in Germany. Would rather buy from a German store to avoid shipping from the US. Unfortunately, .de site forwards me to .uk sight once I add the first item to the basket. It also "forgets" the basket contents at that point, stating that cookies must be enabled (they are already on). Any suggestions?

Why .458 SOCOM is viable
It allows the shooter to go from .223 ballistics (62gr 3000fps) to short-range thumper (300 grain bullet – 1800 to 2000 fps | 400 grain bullet – 1600 to 1800 fps | 500 grain bullet – 980 to 1300 fps | 600 grain bullet – 1000 fps) by changing only the upper. The same lower and the same .223 magazines (except Magpul) work for this round.

(Teppo Jutsu 10.5" upper)
Effective range is 125-150m, which is plenty for brush hunting and bear defense. Follow-up shots are much quicker than from 45-70 guide gun because of the straight-line stock and recoil reduction from self-loading.

Getting through obstacles
Suppressed .458 carbine.
Effect on target behind 1/4" diamond plate and 7" seasoned wood.
SBR Ammunition
.308AP would penetrate similarly, but it won't fit in .223 sized receiver like .458 does.

As promised, gelatin test results for .458
This performance is good but not exceptional...until you consider that the bullet came from a .223-sized lower and a fairly light-weight upper. It didn't originate from a much heavier .308-size receiver, nor was the upper as bulky as a 50BMG variety. It's a regular size and weight rifle but it throws 5x the weight of metal of a regular AR15. For hunting or bear defense, this would work well. For bears, 410-grain solids may be preferable to 300-gr expandable bullets.
12ga sabot slugs have similar performance, but having ten rounds on tap with an autoloading rifle seems preferable for rapid follow-up shots.

Weapons of the government elite bodyguards meet those requirements. Civilian rubber-shooters...

TSA
I wonder if gay travelers can request that pat-downs be conducted by members of opposite sex (for the same reason why straight travelers might prefer pat-downs by members of the same sex)? A rather obese business client of mine once said that getting groped by female TSA agents at LAX was the most action she got all year...

Tried to get photos of .458 muzzle flash
At ISO400 and aperture f2.8 (which was sufficient for depicting muzzle flash of pertty much any firearms I used in the past), nothing showed up. In complete darkness (two hours after sunset), the 16" rifle with 300gr SBR ball showed minor red glow entirely contained in the flash hider. It didn't affect our night vision at all. Interesting and unexpected but definitely a welcome result.

A good sign.
Went to the range with two Marines, one a sniper and another a SAW gunner/small arms instructor. Both shot Remington RSASS (made by JP) 7.62 rifle and both said "I think I can raise the funds to buy this!" right after firing it. We shot at 50m (which is closer than 308 bullet fully stabilizes) and got 1.2MOA with two types of Hornady ballistic tip 150gr ammo -- firing from a bipod in dusk/night at a target lit only by a small flashlight. No malfunctions.
