Based on JP Enterprises LRP-07, it solved the problems that other AR types have would sound suppressors. The receiver is enclosed in the back, so no gas can bleed through to the shooter's face. The large folding charging handle is on the left, allowing straight pull manual reloading if desired. Heat dissipation is aided by a finned radiator under the forend. In other words, I now have a new favorite 308 AR.

Guns of Chad Kandros (Nashville, TN)
I have a new gunsmith. A mutual friend introduced us recently. Chad makes practical 1911s. His attention to detail and understanding of this pistol type are superb.
If you'd like a custom gun or smithing done, he may be reached by email (kandros@comcast.net).

The fancy custom knife was a birthday present to me from Snarky Tamara.

Appleseed snapshots
One of the participants.
My friend Nick tries the carbine with which I shot the course today: Tactical Solutions .22 upper and A&D conversion for 275rd American 180 drum magazine. Heavy trigger was a bit of a problem, but the 1-4x Primary Arms scope proved decisive in allowing me to shoot much better than at previous events (score of 221). The advantage over both iron sights and unmagnified red dot was pretty drastic. I did prone and sitting shots at 4x, standing at 2x. The stock changed length between positions, too.

In case I have not mentioned this recently: Appleseed is terrific basic marksmanship training, very productive and informative, also fun.

On the one hand, I scored 221 on this target. On the other, this is a reduced 25m target -- so the .22 holes actually represent .88 if scaled proportionally to 100m. On the third, slightly mutant hand, 221 is a good deal higher than my scores at the previous shoots...some of it may be better shooting but I suspect the increase is actually due almost entirely to better glass letting me see the targets clearly and having a sound suppressor for comfort.

Appleseed, day 2
Just returned from the second day. Upped my top score to 225, shooting with suppressed Mossberg 144LSA and 4x Leupold scope. With it and the .22 AR, I got scores ranging form 200 to 217, so the skill improvement is consistent. Can't think of a better venue -- useful, inexpensive and fun -- to hone basic shooting skills and to learn a little American history. Almost half of the participants were kids, and probably half of all shooters were women. It really is a great civic outreach.

Eley Sport 22LR
I picked up a few boxes from Aim Surplus just to try it out. The ammo worked great at Appleseed this weekend. Unfortunately, Aim and several other places I checked are all out of it. Does anyone know of any good sources of it (and/or CCI subsonics) at reasonable prices. Aim asked 2.45 per 50rd box of Ely Sport, I'd like to find something comparable.
Had yet another chance to discover that Remington rimfire ammo, esp. subsonics, are junk. They'd tied up every semi-auto gun in which I tried them AND magazines for my bolt action. Misfires run to 20% in some lots and never below 5%.

Shooting like a girl, a compliment.
This weekend's Appleseed had about thirty shooters, about evenly split between adults and kids, men and women. The only person to shoot the entire "redcoat" target without misses was a 13-yo girl. She also proved herself a pretty good photographer, running my backup camera like a pro. Her mother qualified for the rifleman patch, one f only two people this weekend to do so. Her 9-yo sister also shot extremely well. Both girls and their 14-yo brother conducted themselves with maturity far beyond their chronological age. I guess good parenting shows up in more than just disciplined marksmanship.
