They came from all around the world
Where "rights" wasn't even a word
From countries where evil ruled all
And freedom could not take hold

With hopes they came for a better life
And worked to make hopes true
Except for where they were first born
People like me and you

But old-time fears give keener sense
To those who joined us here
Before the natives the trouble they smelled
And hard-won freedom held dear

Like Greek soothsayers or Roman geese
They sounded an alarm
For the foes of liberty are in the wings
Ready to do us harm

These people smelled what they knew so well
The rot of bondage and pawn
In which the government gets to tell
And command every man they own

It would behoove native-born to hear
What the refugees have to tell
Lest our land like their old world
Becomes just another hell

And fear we might having to engage
The forces of those who rule
We'll do better while passions rage
Than later when spirit cools

Than later on when our arms are tied
Our hosts disbanded, disarmed
Then we cannot put up much of a fight
And even retreat will be barred

So listen to those who know first-hand
How tyranny gets its start
And while you can, with ballots and lead
Vote and, if need be, fight

What is takes to break a bowling ball

These balls did not break from impact on the ground or ice. But take one hard-headed pilot...

Jarheads have similar effect, but they break cast iron balls. Bowling balls just get knocked up and then get no letters or phone calls from deployment.

HELP WANTED: photo retouching

I am hitting a bottleneck in my production process: I can't do everything in the time required. So I am looking for a retoucher to help me. Below are typical examples of work I would ask you to do:

They are linked to higher resolution photos in JPEG format. Usually, I would provide RAW but we'll use JPEGs now for expediency.

If you would like to work with me, please retouch one or both of the linked high-resolution files as examples. The final image should be sent as a .psd file with either a path or an alpha channel separating the object from the background, color correction and dust/spots removed. Any other cosmetic improvements are up to you. Email the results to olegvolk at gmail. These samples are of average difficulty. Some photos will be more involved, some less.

Please include your rates and typical turnaround times in the email, as well as the preferred payment methods. The volume of work can be as low as couple of photos per week and as high as 50.

UPDATE: So far, I received three sets of examples. None had all dust and scratches removed, though one came fairly close. In one case, not all of the background was removed, in another small parts of the image were missing. The reason I am trying to find help is so that I can delegate the attention to details to a competent collaborator. These files are large, so sending them back and forth to get results through multiple iterations of retouching isn't going to be practical.

How would you go about evening out the skin tone in a photo like this? I'd rather not try to clone stamp every little detail.

Functional simplicity: M3A1 "grease gun"

Controllable submachine gun in 45ACP with built-in magazine loader built for about $6US during WW2. 2010 equivalent price would have been about $76. Though all but the simplest guns made now cost more due to regulations and firearm excise tax, this illustrates how easily submachine guns of usable quality can be manufactured if other guns are ever banned. If stamping equipment for sheet metal is unavailable, plastic may be used for the receiver, sights and fire control group. If welding is unavailable, screws or rivets may be used. If rifling bench is not available, a polygonally rifled barrel may be made with a mandril and a hydraulic or even mechanical (free-falling) hammer.

In for a penny, in for a pound

When Germans came into Poland, Poles made no more sporting shotguns. They made Sten clones. When Russians went into Chechniya, Chechens made no sporting shotguns, either. They made various submachine guns. Should US anti-gun creatures succeed in driving regular rifles and shotguns out of legal circulation, they will see more submachine guns as well. Sound suppressors would reduce the risk of discovery by authorities as well as the muzzle blast, so having a silenced gun would be safer for the user. Seems to me that the American anti-gun activists don't understand just how simple open-bolt weapons really are.

Might be worth educating them. Perhaps those who still think gun control is a good idea would give it up for pragmatic rather than ideological reasons...and if they will not, at least the fence-sitters would know gun control fans for the delusional critters they are.

This is why eye protection at the range is important.

Why bans on weapons cannot stop psychopaths.

During the Clinton ban of 1994-2004, magazines holding over 10 rounds became quite expensive. A jump from $15 to $120 wasn't unusual. Imagine a ban so sweeping that every gun, magazine and cartridge costs 20 times more than before. Who would be able to afford that?

The law-abiding people will not, as they also have to pay for food, shelter and other normal expenses. The criminals can, with difficulty, as they can treat arming up as a business expense -- and won't need quite as much weaponry to dominate the disarmed public. The deranged, murderous psychopaths will be able to afford the arms and ammo easily -- precisely because they are deranged. A person who expects to murder dozens and to die in the process or be imprisoned thereafter or -- more than likely has not even given a thought to the outcome at all -- doesn't worry about the credit card bill that will come due after the massacre. The mass murder episode is literally the last thing they plan to do in life and cost is no object.

A psycho murderer can devote all his resources -- and all his credit -- to the task of arming up. The price of ammunition is not a concern for such people. If the guns aren't merely expensive but also illegal -- again, in for a penny, in for a pound. A person who intends to murder is hardly worried about liability for statutory transgressions. His law-abiding victims on the other hand are very concerned about breaking the law and so remain unarmed and vulnerable...more vulnerable than if they could arm themselves for self-protection.
