How much difference do product photos make?

Earlier today, a friend showed me his Belgian-made Browning Hi-Power. He mentioned that it was on the chopping block to raise funds for his business, but I could do photos of it while he still had it. Having looked at his photos, I just had to take my own. These were done very quickly, while I ducked out of the party to the studio.

So I am curious if better photos will help him find a new home for this pistol.

What’s the purpose of the slide vents?

Canik, Walther, Grand Power, other race guns, all have these openings. My first guess was lightening the slide to keep its mass the same as an shorter models. Wouldn’t just thinning the slide achieve the same purpose without creating new paths for dust and sand to enter the gun?

Second guess, for venting heat from the barrel. Just how necessary is that for competition shooting?

The longslide version of the TP9 seems to do well in controlled rapid fire. DJ Petrou is pretty fast with the mag changes, too. A full review is coming soon.

What to take to a quick trip with a new model to the neighbor’s farmland? Yankee Hill 8900 integrally suppressed clone of a 10-22 with a 1.5-4x Leupold scope. Ear safe with Aguila 40gr subsonics, and accurate enough for the novice shooter to ring 6 inch steel reliably at 75 yards. While the rifle is a 1.5-2MOA shooter, depending on the ammunition, hitting the partly camouflaged steel hiding behind vegetation wasn’t a gimme. A nicely balanced rifle with a good optic really help…without bothering the neighbors with noise.

New edits of old photos.

Back in 2009, I edited one image from a shoot because its strangeness appealed to me.

This week, I edited two more conventional photos because I learned more about editing and could do a better job than before. Photos like these are an interesting time capsule. How does the model look today, eight years later?

Starting from a color digital file, I could do precise color to B&W conversion, edit tone curves extensively, do a lot that would have been nearly impossible in the conventional darkroom. Some geniuses, like Misha Gordin, can do miracles with enlargers. I prefer the crutch of Photoshop. And a philosophical comic strip addressing nudity.

Did she bring enough for everyone?

A slightly exaggerated rendition of both effect and capacity, but a neat movie fragment nonetheless.
