Just look at those rogues!

And the result? She’s running hippie-blessed 5.56mm instead of the good ol’ orthodox 7.62mm like a man!

Disgusting, don’t you think?

2014, Como, Italy. A little gas station with fuel prices showing why Italians favor small cars, scooters and bicycles, or diesel-engined vehicles.

At the exchange rate of the time, the price for basic unleaded was just over $9/gallon. Parking space being scarce in the hilly medieval cities probably added to the emphasis on smaller vehicles.

Inside, the picture was a bit different from the US gas stations. While the convenience store was similar in principle, the level of quality was rather different.

Good quality, made to order coffee was available. So was a variety of liquors. I was reminded of that quite forcibly a week later in Bucksnort, Tennessee, where I made the mistake of getting American gas station coffee. Almost three years later, I still remember my reaction to the foul taste. I dumped the coffee, quite sure that is was actually 50/50 mix of used motor oil and possum feces. There’s no way actual coffee could taste that bad…except that US somehow manages to have worse quality bread and beverages than some of the poorest European countries.

Why does even a provincial train station in Italy has freshly squeezed orange juice and baked goods worth eating, while even more cosmopolitan parts of the US have nothing better than donuts with disgusting corn syrup glaze and similarly unappetizing junk?

First date included a little 75 to 100 yard plinking with a custom fast-twist Volquartsen rifle. Neither of them missed much, supported further out or offhand at 50 yards.

The now-discontinued Gemtech G5-22 mimicked a centerfire suppressor in size, so it was extra-effective on subsonic rimfire ammunition. The expected bolt movement noise was actually nearly unnoticeable. Attenuated muzzle blast didn’t get in the way of the conversation, and clink of the steel targets was faint enough from the distance to not be distracting.

The quiet was also a plus for the neighbors whose houses were under a hundred yards away. Hearing Protection Act can’t become law fast enough!

Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-12x scope might look like an overkill for rimfire, but it has a forgiving eyebox, close focus/parallax correction and really clear optics.

While many learn to shoot for practical reasons, most get into it for fun. But the entry barrier can be high, not just in regulatory and technical aspects, but in the lack of knowledge or confidence to try a potentially dangerous hobby. That’s no different from learning to ride a horse or a motorcycle.

So let your friends have fun by taking care of the process for them at first. We can always use more allies and even just non-hostile political bystanders.

…until the first time I tried it.

Turned out, Beretta 12S is an ergonomic nightmare, with badly designed sights and safety. The back-pressure from the sound suppressor also threw gunk into the user’s face from the ejection port. Had submachine guns been in wide civilian use, they would have improved a lot quicker than in our reality…there’s no substitute for a large non-institutional user base when it comes to refining a product.
